Consider the wildflowers - Matthew 6:25–34

Jesus’ earthly ministry starts with small gatherings, teaching and instructing them about the Kingdom of God and his mission as the messiah. We see people abandoning their lives and following Jesus as he goes from town to town, ministering to the people, driving out evil spirits, healing the sick, broken and lonely, all while preaching God’s radical plan of enacting justice and providing forgiveness to reconcile us to Himself.

It culminates in the pivotal moment of Jesus' ministry and the most significant sermon ever given. It’s radical and transformative to their and our understanding of righteousness and the choice laid before us daily, but it’s not new.

After detailing the inheritors of the kingdom of heaven, his fulfilment of the law of Moses, and ultimately how we are to live as followers of Him, He has laid a foundation for us to become intensely practical, and that’s where we pick up in Matthew 6:25-34.

“Therefore” - because of this understanding of righteous living and devotedness to God, “don’t worry” - Don’t be of doubtful mind, consumed by your own thoughts, but set your mind on things above, having the mind of Christ and “Consider” - Observe and learn how the rest of creation aren’t so prone to unbelief.

“Aren’t you worth more than they?” - Are we not made in His image, a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, set apart for His good, pleasing and perfect will?

So again, “Consider” - observe and learn from the Wildflowers - the Tulips and the Lillies, which God has adorned in the most beautiful colour arrangements. “They don’t labor or spin thread” - They are incapable of performing laborious tasks or good deeds, yet even in their relative insignificance, God has worked in incredible detail in their beauty.

“You of little faith” - Will he not provide for us, his precious possession, that which we need?

But “seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you” - Calling back to his sermon thus far, Jesus implores us to first seek to be in the right relationship with God and others. Prioritising Him as LORD, and from that position, he will rule and reign over our lives regardless of ourcircumstances.

The decision is placed before us daily, will we place him first, learn from the wildflowers and allow God to work His glory and beauty through us?

THE CURE FOR ANXIETY - Mt 6:25–34 (CSB)
25 “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? 27 Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. 30 If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you— you of little faith? 31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
